The Residency - A Retreat for Authors, Scholars, and Visual Artists

This flagship program provides a welcoming retreat for writers, artists, and scientific researchers to gather work, and reflect in a most serene environment, the selected writers and researchers will spend a few weeks or months at a time during which they are freed from all constraints for a period of reflection and creativity.

The Board Members of the Foundation will compose an annual artistic review committee. Interested scholars will send their work-in-progress, and the selected candidates will become authors and Scholars in Residence. The accommodations will be modest, but the residents will have the freedom to work on a project of their choosing without commercial or political restraints.

The duration of stay will be decided on the nature of work each resident is engaged upon. They will be free to interact with the neighborhood or isolate themselves completely. Scholars in residence will have the opportunity to hold workshops and special tutorials with students, going out to deliver lectures in nearby institutions or simply open themselves out to outsiders for exchanges of ideas – all these will be available but not imposed.

Foundation Fellows will spend a few days, weeks or months at a time during, in which they are freed of all constraints for a period of reflection and creativity. The Foundation will set up a Selection and Review committee to identify artistes and scholars in need of just such a productive respite. They will be invited to send abstracts or outlines of their works in progress, and the selected candidates will become Foundation Fellows in Residence.

Exceptions may be made where the established writer or artist consents to devote a number of hours to be mutually agreed – with the successful intakes now designated Junior Foundation Fellows where such a wish has been expressed. Every Resident will arrange with the management the circumstances of his or her stay taking into consideration unique requirements of every discipline.

The Foundation will also initiate projects of its own over which experts in related disciplines are invited to rub minds over a period in residence.

Emphasis, especially at inception, has been placed on youth, with a view to a Mentor/Protégé development partnership where desirable and practical. Accommodations will be modest, but residents will have the freedom to work on a project of their choosing without economic or other constraints or distractions. The duration of stay will be decided on the nature of each Fellows project and its demands. Fellows will be free to interact with the neighborhood or isolate themselves completely.

Cultural encounters will be organized around the occasional visits by internationally famous figures in the Arts and Sciences. Special attention will be given to the resuscitation of traditional art forms – such as the Yoruba Folk Opera, Pottery, Batik Arts, and environmentally relevant architectural designs which are in danger of extinction.
